“Our Right as Canadians to Say Merry Christmas”

In the Canadian Charter of Rights, it states our fundamental freedoms; freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of thought, belief, opinion and freedom of expression. Why is it that we are being told in our places of employment and in the public sector that we cannot say Merry Christmas? A believer shared with me the other day how she used the Charter of Rights to challenge her employer’s memo that persuaded staff to say “Happy Holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas”, she won!

This is an excerpt from Ezra Levant’s Christmas Column in the 2004 Calgary Sun: “This is not just about ornaments or incidentals. It is an outward reflection of the core values that make us different from, say, Iran, or Togo. We are not just another country. We are a great country, not because of our geography or economy, but because our culture is rooted in the highest ideals. They are Christian principles - call them Judeo-Christian principles, if it makes you more comfortable. But that is what makes Canada great -- not our forests, or weather, or government spending.”

Intercessors, let us pray that the citizens of Canada will recognize and agree that Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and rule of law. (It’s in the first sentence of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
